Foster + Partners blend architecture, urban planning, and landscape design into a holistic vision — one in which sustainability is not an option, but a guiding principle. At the heart of every design is the human experience and our interaction with the world around us. The act of reaching for a door handle — often our first tactile encounter with a building — becomes a sensory moment in its own right.
A door handle is more than a functional object — it’s a statement of architectural intent. For the development of the FSB 1292 product family, the Foster + Partners Industrial Design team studied both historical and contemporary everyday objects to better understand the significance of tactile interaction in our lives.
Insights into how we naturally grasp and perceive materials directly shaped the handle’s form — engineered and made in Germany in aluminum, stainless steel, and bronze, each finished with premium surfaces. With three distinct handle designs, the comprehensive product family delivers aesthetic continuity while meeting a range of functional and technical requirements.
Built to Last. Designed to Save. Engineered for Tomorrow.
True quality is not only revealed through daily use — but throughout a product’s entire life cycle. One standout innovation: our Aluminum Pure finish. As the first hardware manufacturer to introduce this surface, we set a new benchmark in sustainable design.
Its textured, characterful surface symbolizes sustainability in its purest form. Processing Aluminum Pure consumes 37% less energy compared to standard anodized aluminum, while also simplifying end-of-life recycling.
Interview with Mike Holland, Senior Partner, Head of Industrial Design
“I believe that we design better products when we understand the materials and processes used to create them. That’s why close collaboration with everyone involved in the design and manufacturing of a product is very important to us.”
The form and materiality of the FSB 1292 celebrate the interplay between artisanal tradition and industrial precision. Its geometry reflects hand-molded contours and flowing lines — a soft, tactile design that resists technical definition, but is instantly understood by both eye and hand.
Positioned at the intersection of sculpture and industrial design, this handle features gentle curves and rounded edges that modulate reflected light and invite the hand with intuitive comfort.
