FSB Leads the Way with the First Cradle to Cradle Certification in the Door Handle Industry

FSB is the first manufacturer in the international door handle industry to receive a Cradle to Cradle certification under the current Version 4.1 standard. The stainless steel product collections FSB 1076, also known as the “Frankfurt Model”, and its escape door counterpart, FSB 1016, have been certified at the Bronze level. This marks a significant milestone in sustainability and reinforces FSB’s commitment to a circular economy.

Cradle to Cradle Certified® is the world’s most advanced, science-based standard for the design and production of safe, circular products. What does that mean in practical terms? The certification is valid for three years. During this period, FSB commits to making further improvements across all relevant impact categories. At present, the certification applies exclusively to all stainless steel variants of the FSB 1076 and FSB 1016 models, excluding the FSB AFL® version.

Our external certification partner was EPEA, a subsidiary of Drees & Sommer based in Hamburg. Other certified companies in the building industry include Schüco and heroal.

What Are the Key Criteria for Cradle to Cradle Certification?

• Material Health: All materials and chemicals used in the product are identified throughout the entire supply chain and assessed for their impact on human health and the environment. The goal is to replace all hazardous or unidentified substances with ingredients that are safe for all ecosystems.

• Product Circularity: Products are designed in such a way that their components are either biodegradable or can be recycled as part of the biological or technical cycle.

• Clean Air & Climate Protection: Depending on the certification level, one key requirement is the use of 100% renewable energy for manufacturing processes, supporting emissions reduction and climate action.

• Water & Soil Stewardship: Water and soil are treated as valuable, shared resources. Watersheds and soil ecosystems are protected, clean drinking water is made available, and wastewater and sludge are treated to a high standard.

• Social Fairness: The company is managed in a way that respects all people and ecosystems, aiming for continuous improvement towards a positive impact on both society and the planet.
