Design Continuity with Character: FSB 1291 and FSB 1292 by Foster + Partners

With FSB 1291 and FSB 1292, Foster + Partners Industrial Design have developed two door handles that form the foundation of a particularly extensive product family. The collection is defined by consistency across all areas of application, with quality and durability at the core of its design concept.

The starting point for the product family is FSB 1291—an unconventional design that stands apart through its short grip section, pronounced contact surface, and soft, flowing form.

Foster + Partners is an internationally renowned studio for architecture, urbanism, engineering, and product design. Their work is recognized for its innovative spirit, sustainable approach, and human-centered design ethos. The way people interact with the built environment is always central to their thinking.

Together with FSB, the team at Foster + Partners Industrial Design examined historical and contemporary everyday objects to better understand how form, function, and touch contribute to meaningful interaction.

A door handle often serves as the first point of contact with a building. When thoughtfully designed, it extends an intuitive welcome—through both its appearance and the tactile quality of its grip, shaped around human needs.

The FSB 1291 model distinguishes itself as a palm handle. Its compact proportions and accentuated surface make it visually striking and comfortable in the hand. The softly rounded contours, drawn from a freehand curve, give the handle a subtle elegance—guiding the way light reflects across its surface. Foster + Partners describe this effect as a “play of light.”

FSB 1292 builds on this design language with a longer grip section, offering an alternative that adapts the form to the dimensions of classic lever handles.

The FSB 1292 product family is available in a range of variants, including an EN 179-compliant version for emergency exit applications. This ensures full functionality in civic and commercial properties while maintaining aesthetic continuity.

Crafted from high-quality aluminum, stainless steel, or bronze, every product in the FSB 1292 family is built for long-term durability. The design harmonizes seamlessly with a wide range of materials and finishes, enabling integration into diverse architectural contexts.

FSB also offers the collection in its exclusive Aluminum Pure finish. This surface is both a tactile and visual innovation—and a step forward in sustainability. By eliminating polishing, blasting, and anodizing, the production process consumes less energy and water while simplifying recycling at the end of the product's life. All aluminum used by FSB has a carbon footprint of just 4 kg CO₂/kg—one quarter of the global average.

FSB is proud to add the forward-looking designs by Foster + Partners Industrial Design to its portfolio—now available in the resource-conscious Aluminum Pure finish.
