The residential corner building in 144 Vanderbilt Avenue, Brooklyn, by New York based studio SO–IL architecture, has a robust and urban appearance, featuring precast concrete panels of varied shapes, sizes, and finishes. The concrete‘s earthy-red tone blends naturally into New York's classic brick facades. Aiming to transform conventional multifamily housing, every apartment in 144 Vanderbilt provides a green and tranquil inner haven, contrasting the vibrant street life.

144 Vanderbilt’s Dinesen Apartment was designed by Copenhagen based architect David Thulstrup as a temporary interior showroom. Contrasting the building’s concrete facade, the apartment‘s interior is characterized by its seamless flow of wood through the floors, walls, built-in furniture and custom half-turn staircase as well as the natural warmth of the wood.

Meticulously crafted, the natural cracks in the Danish oak are held by oak butterfly joints, the walls not paneled with wood are painted in subtle shades developed by Thulstrup himself. Dinesen Apartment balances contemporary and classic elements featuring Thulstrup’s own Arv Collection for Brdr. Krüger, John Pawson’s furniture pieces for Dinesen, and Danish vintage design icons by Arne Jacobsen and Severin Hansen.

With great sensibility for surfaces, materiality and textures – Kvadrat towels embellish the bathroom – Dinesen Apartment commits to craftsmanship with every detail. For the handles award-winning architect David Thulstrup chose FSB 1267, the Homage to Mies, in its classic polished aluminum surface. With its flowing transition from round neck to flat grip, it offers intuitive guidance with a quiet nod to its modernist history.

The showroom is now closed.
